ProtocolQA

As the year draws to a close, I wanted to share a different kind of project completed in the Gkogkas Lab: ProtocolQA, a document-grounded assistant that helps lab members find the right protocol steps (from our own files, across formats and versions) and run routine calculations reliably, without relying on “oral tradition".

This was built by Ares Osorio, who joined us for two summer internships, first in 2024 (at age 16) and again in 2025 (at 17). Most of us at 16 were still learning to find the right folder, while Ares was building the tool that finds the right protocol.

Having this in place meaningfully improves onboarding and reproducibility in the lab, and, on the administrative side, it is the closest thing we have to a lab assistant that can also help new lab members navigate Greek bureaucracy with a straight face.

Ares, congratulations on what you delivered- best of luck with your college applications.

Many thanks to Georgia Voudouri and all other lab members Karmel Sofia Gkika and Kleanthi Chalkiadaki that worked with Ares during those internships hosted at BRI FORTH #NeurobiologyLab Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH)
